Perhaps the terminal location for artist projects is the internet. Inspired by this venue, Daniel Young and Christian Giroux working with designer Katja Gretzinger have produced an artist book conceived to be experienced from this vantage point. Didactically titled A-BOOK-THAT-IS-A-WEBSITE-FOR-A-FILM-THAT-IS-A-SCULPTURE.CGDY.COM is an experimental artist publication that combines frame scans from a 35mm motion picture film with exhibition documentation, in process photography, concept images, design and engineering drawings from their sculpture that is also film: Camera Path / Film Path with under-titles.
Accompanying the images there are texts (under-titles) integrated into Camera Path / Film Path with under-titles from John Barlow, Ina Blom, Eric Cazdyn, Geoffrey Farmer, Agnieszka Gratza, Mesh Consultants, Erin Moure, Bridget Moser, Judy Radul, Patricia Reed, Reza Negarestani, Mohammand Salemy and Micheal Snow.
The publication is a conceptual sister to the artwork Camera Path / Film Path with under-titles. What began as the desire to collide the projected image with the apparatus of its presentation and the moving image with sculpture found its form by synchronizing a virtual camera path, with path of a film loop. The artists started with a closed granny knot, and further tangled it into a knot with five arcs. Within the 3D modeling environment the artwork was composed into a tangled of motion picture film becoming a sculpture of images, a one hundred meter long surface of images from the perspective of its surface.
Using the artwork, its methods, interests and impulses thirteen artists, theorists, poets and writers provided texts that act as under-titles encoding their own narratives, subjectivities, tonalities that developed into its own narrative system. Text and ‘the word’ is added to the struggle between sculpture and moving image, perhaps producing a synesthetic effect of welding the experience of diffrent media together in the audience.
Published by Broken Dimanche press on the occasion of the exhibition Camera Path / Film Path with under-titles at Artist Run Center Inter/Access, Toronto, March 6th-May 4th, 2019 where it has been toured and is currently exhibiting at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (until October 6, 2019)
