Libros Walden publishes in Spain Mumblecore: Explorations on American Independent Cinema, a collective book edited by the Argentine magazine Taipei, marking the first title in Spanish dedicated to mumblecore.

Forged in the festival circuit, particularly at events like South by Southwest in the early 2000s, mumblecore emerged as a low-cost continuation of 1990s indie cinema, which had been subsumed by Hollywood. It brought a breath of fresh air, serving as a springboard for figures like Greta Gerwig, the Safdie brothers, David Lowery, and Josephine Decker, who eventually overtook pioneers such as Joe Swanberg, Andrew Bujalski, and the Duplass brothers—whose moment of glory, fittingly for the times, came via streaming platforms.

Through critical analyses of works and authors shaping the mumblecore movement, as well as conversations with some of its directors, this book not only highlights the artistic quality of these films but also delves into the relationships between the filmmakers—a truly vibrant and collective community where participating in each other’s projects was the norm.

With its low-budget shoots, mundane visuals, and minimalist gestures, mumblecore marked a new chapter in the youthful history of American cinema. While 1950s culture had introduced a stage of life distinct from both childhood and adulthood, the late 20th century revealed a more advanced and radicalized version of this process. In mumblecore, this focus on youth coincided with intimate aesthetics, the rise of digital culture, minuscule budgets, and a complex dialogue with the history of American independent cinema.

This book addresses various topics of interest related to this cycle of films, largely overlooked in Spain, which defined the early years of the 21st century when industrial cinema seemed to be the only option in the United States.

With contributions by Álvaro Bretal, Milagros Porta, Iván Zgaib, Agustín Bertí, Martín Emilio Campos, Filipe Furtado, Rafael Guilhem, J. Hoberman, Marcos Adrián Pérez Llahí, María San Filippo, Amy Taubin, Alicia Van Couvering, and Brett Wright
