BABYLON was born out of a long-term project that started in 2008, without any specific intention, motivated only by my curiosity and interest in urban life. Looking at my negatives and archives years later, it seems to have taken shape gradually, as if by itself, presenting the image of an envisioned city.
“… observing the environment I was living in, I began to ask myself questions about it. How was it shaped by man? How does it affect him, and how does he continue to affect it? How do we exist within it, either as individuals or groups? In what ways do we influence each other within the city? … … Although the cities we live in today might differ in appearance, I believe they are extremely similar in their core function. So much so that when we say “the city” we visualise and understand a common if vague, archetypal image, as when they once said Babylon, Rome or Constantinople. Which may be due to the fact that all cities, before they acquire physical existence, are usually nothing more than an image or series of images. Drawings on paper. They are constantly growing and expanding, like beehives, albeit in a more chaotic way. … … The only thing that seems to remain constant in this universal Babylon is its context. The contents of such a city look only like traces. Interchangeable and ephemeral.”
