Daniel Miller is driving at night through the Forest of Dean, searching for a cabin where he plans to hide away. His wife has left him. His doctor doesn’t understand him. He is tormented by the idea that he is not a free individual but rather a character in a book—a horrible and sordid book. It is the Author who forces him to do the things that disgust him so deeply: mistreating his wife, visiting prostitutes, obsessing over pornography... Desperate to escape the Author’s tyranny, he returns to the place where he spent his childhood, hoping against hope that he might regain control over his life there.

But as soon as he arrives at the cabin, his story abandons him—because the truth is that Daniel Miller is a character in a book. A book written by a man who is suddenly terrified by the thought that someone might believe Daniel Miller’s story to be autobiographical.

Dennis Potter’s debut novel, Hide and Seek (1973), is a brilliant, vibrant, and witty work of metanarrative in which the layers between author and character unfold like a set of Russian nesting dolls. The novel explores classic themes found in Potter’s body of work: religion, sex, family, betrayal, and, of course, the concept of the author as God.

Foreword by: José Sanz
