A pig can make an affectionate pet, but it can also become a tasty bacon sandwich. In fact, there are traces of pig in many consumer products and places one would not even consider as containing animal parts. The meat industry strives to extract every penny of profit from the pig, which results in it further weaving its way into our lives and the everyday products we use and consume.

What is it that makes it okay for some animals to be killable while others can become close companions? I chose the pig as the subject of this book to explore the odd relationship and duality created between the pig as a pet and the industrial pig.
