This research focuses on Leone Sbrana and his entire practice. Born in Florence on November 14th, 1919, Sbrana was part of the first generation of Italian graphic designers. He studied in Milan where he wove a broad network of collaborations with prominent professionals of his time. In the early Fifties he settled in Florence playing the role of the first indigenous graphic designer. Eclectic, always up-to-date with the latest trends, he was an exponent of Italian Rationalist Graphics — also known as “terza via” (third way) — while managed to identify and collect in a rich library some of the most important international magazines and publications, a rather unique achievement in a provincial context. This project is an attempt to catalog and describe the heterogeneity of his work as it unfolded through the turning points and episodes that defined it. At the same time, it focuses on the means and methods by which a graphic designer operating outside the industrial hubs of northern Italy could take advantage of to form and express himself while keeping being updated on the latest evolutions in design. A text by Michele Galluzzo on Italian advertising between the Sixties and the Eighties opens the publication.
