Desde los márgenes aims to serve as a map to explore the vast territory of cinema, going beyond the endlessly celebrated classics—the equivalent of limiting yourself to seeing the Eiffel Tower, the Duomo, or Times Square when traveling. It’s a list of films that takes you through intriguing streets, remote neighborhoods, and abandoned industrial zones where you might feel a bit scared but end up with better stories and photos.

300 films you should watch because they’re brilliant, fun, or interesting for any reason: major blockbusters and ultra-amateur creations, movies perfect for a first date and others that might land you in legal trouble, films to learn about cinema, life, death, or El Palmar de Troya. Featuring rising talents and people who only ever remained as such, feminist cinema, risqué films, punk gems, trash, kitsch, mondo, mumblecore, and others for which there aren’t even proper terms. Films from Finland and Guatemala, Greece, Armenia, and Venezuela, from the USSR and Hollywood, French, Italian, and Japanese cinema, plus a wealth of Spanish cinema that was overlooked by both audiences and critics despite its quality—and which still suffers the same fate today. You might even end up loving some of these films, which is the whole point: not to enjoy what you read but to love what you watch because of what you’ve read.

This new edition of Desde los márgenes compiles the two out-of-print books in the series (Desde los márgenes and La peli era mejor [Desde los márgenes II]) without updating the texts—just as the films reviewed haven’t changed over time. With a new design and larger format, this edition includes 25 films not featured in the original books and a new foreword by Enrique Piñuel.
