LA BOHEMIA
SPECIAL EDITION OF 70 HAND-NUMBERED COPIES WITH SILK-SCREENED CLOTH.

The tenth anniversary of Balam magazine is a magic act. Welcome, everyone, to a special performance, which will have bohemia as its special guest. This time, she will not be wearing her European-style outfit. Instead, she will put into words and images what is slowly disappearing. That which has always been on the margins. Bohemia as a celebration of life, as a key to understanding, and as an axis for congregating around what has not yet been modernized. This issue is a ritual and an invocation: here dwell the purest of beliefs, the ones that originate new worlds.

In times when hate speeches and indifference prevail, when the waves of fascism hit hard, we contextualize the idea of bohemia as a way of affirming what is ours, what nothing and no one can destroy. Determining figures for the recovery of collective memory and the rupture of the aseptic ideals of whiteness come to interrupt normativity to give way to narratives that needed to be pondered.

Bohemia as immersion, as dance, and as a point of collective synergy. Bohemia as a journey with past and future, as a careful appreciation of what is genuine. Bohemia as a safeguard of that which, even existing, no longer exists. Bohemia as a challenge to violence, as a portal to abundance.

About — Balam is an independent magazine of contemporary photography based in Buenos Aires. Through themes aimed at exposing the multiple realities and accompanying the struggles of minorities and dissidences, it promotes authors who seek to express and project themselves in a territory without distinction of borders. Its publication aims to transform, make visible, question and (re)invent critical discourses that enter into dialogue with social, cultural and political issues from an anti-hegemonic stance and with a poetic effect/affect, unusual in traditional photographic practice.
