Nacimiento (Birth) is a diary. The one that Yolanda Andrés drew and wrote in the days and months following the premature birth of her older daughter,  Candela. It is, apparently, the story of a first time mother and a baby, premature but strong, during her first year of life. But beyond the medical story, the personal adventure, this series of stumbles and advances, these pages hide another birth, that of a vocation and an artistic practice on the margins of the system. Y.A. —that is her signature— is an embroiderer. At that time, she did not even know it herself. She had studied Fine Arts and was inclined to use brushes. Until Candela arrived and Yolanda decided to move away from acrylics and paint thinners as she also left behind the toxicity of mainstream contemporary art.

 

Yolanda Andrés went back to the needles and thread of her childhood and turned them into vehicles for her artistic expression, in the form of her current works—luminous, full of colors, honest—, in a realm separate from the official art world, and a masterful resource to take part in the narration of time. "The needle is an exercise of memory", she says. "Embroidering connects me with the legacy passed on by an entire generation of women but above all, it helps me tell the story of life".
