Otros ejemplos recientes is technically neither an artist’s book, nor a catalogue, nor an essay, nor an exercise in translation, yet it manages to be all these things at once. This publication brings together works that explore various functions, uses, and forms of pedagogy, alongside works that reflect on the relationships between mother tongue, bilingualism, and the peculiar ecosystem sustaining this interrelation. Otros ejemplos recientes also includes an essay by Mirene Arsanios, expanded artwork captions, and a series of epigraphs serving as a prologue, revealing Macedonio Fernández’s influence on the conceptualization of the publication.

Edited on the occasion of Alejandro Cesarco’s exhibitions at Artium Museoa (Vitoria) and Lumiar Cité (Lisbon).

Alejandro Cesarco (Montevideo, 1975) employs strategies of translation and appropriation, which involve narrating and re-narrating, interpreting, misinterpreting, citing, and mediating. A central focus of his work is to question the differences and similarities between looking and reading. Cesarco’s work investigates the book as a technology, delves into the construction and preservation of memory, and addresses the limits and opacity of language. Through various media and strategies, he employs secrecy, indexicality, and fragmentation as narrative modes. While rooted in art history and influenced by literature and theory, Cesarco’s work, without being confessional, is deeply personal. In general, his work studies how meanings shift through different forms of repetition, such as recontextualization and translation.
