Postcards from Paradise reveals an ‘unofficial’ Malta – the story of the islands and its mutations, where time once was indefinable and events unfolded at a slower pace. The moments captured are the stratification of customs, some long preserved, others irretrievably lost that look beyond Malta’s postcard exterior and document the more intimate, surreal side of life on the island where space and time undergo peculiar transformations.
First published, the book Postcards from Paradise was launched on 6 October 2016 in Rome, at Libreria del Viaggiatore, under the patronage of Embassy of Malta in Rome. The book received an Honorable Mention in the Self-Published/Documentary category of the International Photography Awards in 2016.
Second extended edition was launched on 26th April 2019 in Valletta, Malta at Valletta Contemporary.
The book is a result of long-term documentary photo project shot over 15 years. The images reflect an off-centre and un-picturesque Malta, where modern life and a timeless ingenuity combine to produce surreal but also intimate scenes.
Introduction and text by Joseph Gamp, Rick Jordan, Konrad Buhagiar, Chris Briffa, Nikki Petroni, Dr Joanna Delia, Holly Knowles
Photography: Duška Malešević
