Everything that exists could also be different. All that is being is merely a momentary expression of possibility, inherently compelled to change. Everywhere, it shouts at us: nothing is impossible; there are only realms of possibility.
And yet, we encounter the outer limits of these realms constantly in everyday life. The impossible seems as omnipresent as the contingency of being itself. It would be impossible even to count all that is obstructed by impossibility. Does not the boundlessness of possibilities ultimately reveal itself as a form of impossibility?
With infinite possibilities, the concrete becomes so improbable that it verges on the impossible. It is therefore unsurprising that impossibility itself is conceived as an enabling force. Only the impossible makes desire, knowledge, communication, and society possible. The impossible exerts a pull.
In the third issue of Prothese magazine, we present works that explore the edges of impossibility. We thank Professor Dr. Sönke Ahrens for his guest contribution on Productive Impossibilities: On the Conditions of Possibility for Knowledge.
