This handmade book is based on the photographic series about Czech villages shot in 2013-2017. It depicts the countryside landscape in the north-west part of Czech Republic, the historical region of Bohemia. The author observes how the countryside is changing, the ways it's inhabitants construct and reconstruct their environment, following the traces of the past. Ruins, remains, old stones, all blend with nature and slowly but inevitably disappear. The old, settling down in multiple strata with time, creates a foundation for the new. This materiality, ignorant of all political changes endured throughout the centuries, still subtly dominates the lives of the inhabitants of these villages. The structure of the book makes its viewer enter these anonymous settlements, scattered in the rural area, appearing suddenly in the landscape, slowly walking along the empty streets, trying to see through the fences, noticing the details of each house, sometimes meeting some of their inhabitants but, being a stranger, just observing them from the far, and then leaving.
