How to make musicians improvise? Ironically, one way to do so can be to give them a score. But a score without precise instrumental instructions: just a simple input using the power of an image, a few words or names, an abstract drawing.

I’ve been writing graphic scores since 2007. My notations usually give an almost complete freedom to the performers. They are meant to be a source of inspiration for instrument players, driven by a picture or a few words or names. They could be seen as just a drawing, or a collage, or a graphic creation. But they are musical scores: an invitation for other musicians to perform a piece of music inspired by this notation, as they imagine it should be.

It took me seven years to make a first series featuring 94 scores and this book is a selection taken from the original notebook. (Sylvain Chauveau)

The book is printed with Risograph technique and comes hand bound in the typical Sonic Pieces style, using the same materials as on the record covers.

About — mi - so editions is an art book series that complements the record label Sonic Pieces. After working in the music industry for a decade and a half and running a physical store / gallery in Berlin since 2020, Monique Recknagel started the limited edition art book series in 2023. The publications usually relate to a music release or exhibition and often have a direct connection to music or are by artists who work both as musicians and in the visual arts. They feature photographs, collages, drawings, paintings or even graphic scores, and sometimes the visual elements are combined with small poems or quotes. The limited edition releases are handcrafted from locally sourced and recycled materials and printed in Berlin using the Risograph technique.
